FreeFileSync for Mac: Protect Backup Extras Before You Sync

If you use FreeFileSync for a Mac backup, the important question is not which app has the longest feature list. It is whether you can protect the files that exist only on the backup drive before you run the job.

Here is the folder test we recommend before switching tools: use a disposable copy of a real project folder and its external-drive backup. Add one new source file, edit one existing source file, and leave one older export only on the backup. A useful preview should make all three facts obvious.

The folder test: one new file, one changed file, one backup-only file

Imagine a source folder named Client shoot and a backup folder on an external SSD:

• final-selects.jpg is new in the source.
• invoice.pdf changed in the source.
• old-export.mov exists only on the external SSD.

Before running anything, verify that the preview separates those into files to copy or update, unchanged files, and target-only files. If the result surprises you, stop there. A confusing preview is a reason to check the selected folders or exclusions, not a reason to press Sync.

Choose copy/update when the backup may contain deliberate extras

For this example, copy/update is normally the sensible first run. It adds final-selects.jpg, refreshes invoice.pdf, and leaves old-export.mov on the external drive. That is usually what you want from a backup that may hold older exports or archive material.

Mirror is a different decision. It is appropriate only when the external-drive folder is meant to be an exact replica of Client shoot and you have reviewed every target-only file. In this test, mirror can remove old-export.mov.

What to look for in either app

Run the same folder pair in FreeFileSync and FileLever. Do not compare product pages first; compare how quickly you can answer these questions from the preview:

1. Which file is new?
2. Which file needs an update?
3. Which file exists only on the backup?
4. What will copy/update preserve?
5. What could mirror remove?

If you cannot answer those questions quickly, do not run a mirror job yet.
