Protect older photos and videos

Archive older iCloud Photos to an external drive on Mac

Keep older photos and videos on a drive you control before deciding whether to make room in Apple Photos or iCloud. FileLever's Photo Archive works with your system Apple Photos library: choose a cutoff date, preview a Year/month archive, copy and check the selected resources, then decide separately whether to reclaim space.

FileLever is available now on macOS. Windows and Linux builds of FileLever are planned. Your files stay under your control.

Choose a file archive or a Photos library backup

FileLever creates ordinary files in a local folder or on an external drive. This is not a copy of the Photos library database: do not assume it recreates albums, face recognition, or editable Photos history when imported later. Keep a separate library backup if you need that experience.

Apple Photos also has built-in export commands for selected media, including formatted photos and unmodified originals. FileLever adds a date-based preview, checked copies, a saved report, and resume to its archive workflow. Start with a small selection and inspect the exported resources before planning a large archive.

Example: keep older years on an external drive

Suppose you want to archive photos and videos from before January 1, 2024. Choose that cutoff in Photo Archive and an existing empty folder named Photo Archive on your external drive, outside the Photos library. Read the preview to confirm exactly which items and dates are included.

A photo from June 2023 is planned into the corresponding Year/month destination. The preview supplies the actual filenames and resources. A Live Photo, RAW+JPEG pair, or edited item can involve more than one resource, so a file count is not necessarily a photo count.

Selected itemCheck before continuing
Photo from June 2023The date and planned Year/month destination match your intent.
Live Photo or RAW+JPEG itemAll selected companion resources are visible; do not count one file as the whole item.
Item with current editsInspect the selected edit/original resources and the resulting files; do not assume a full edit history is exported.
Unavailable iCloud resourceRead the exception. An incomplete item is not eligible for the optional space-saving step.

Retrieve iCloud originals as needed and resume interruptions

Photo Archive can request cloud-only originals while it runs, without requiring you to download the entire library first. Keep the Mac online and the destination connected, and allow working space on the Mac as well as room on the archive drive. This is not a promise of zero temporary local storage.

If retrieval or copying is interrupted, keep the saved plan and archive folder in place. Reconnect the destination and resume the archive. Review the final report for completed, skipped, or failed resources; an interrupted run is not a completed backup.

Check the archive before any optional removal

Read the report, open a sample of completed photos and videos from the drive, and check companion resources and edits that matter to you. Keep an additional independent copy of irreplaceable media before removing it from the library. One external drive can also fail.

Copy-only remains available. If you separately confirm the optional space-saving action, eligible items move to Apple Photos' Recently Deleted collection. With iCloud Photos enabled, deletions propagate to other devices using that library. FileLever does not empty Recently Deleted, and space recovery is not an immediate guaranteed result of archiving.

A deliberate workflow

A clear path from review to action

  1. Step 01

    Connect the archive drive

Choose an existing empty destination folder outside the Photos library and confirm it has room for the selected media.

  2. Step 02

    Choose the cutoff and media

Select older photos, videos, or both from the system Apple Photos library. Confirm the intended date range in the preview.

  3. Step 03

    Review resources and destinations

Inspect Year/month paths, companions, edits, and exceptions before starting the copy.

  4. Step 04

Archive, resume if needed, and check

Let FileLever copy and check resources. Resolve interruptions, then read the report and inspect the output files.

  5. Step 05

    Choose whether to reclaim space

Keep the library untouched with copy-only, or separately confirm eligible items for Recently Deleted after protecting the archive.

Keep older media accessible

The archive contains ordinary files you can inspect on the drive, outside the Photos library.

See unfinished work

Use the archive report to distinguish completed copies from resources that still need attention.

Decide about storage later

Making another copy does not commit you to removing anything from Apple Photos.

Common questions

Before you start

Must I download every iCloud original to my Mac first?

No. FileLever can retrieve cloud-only resources incrementally during the archive. Internet access, available working space, and a connected destination are still needed.

Does this move my entire Photos library to an external drive?

No. It archives selected media as ordinary files. It does not move or reproduce the complete Photos library database, albums, or editable history.

Will FileLever automatically delete the archived photos?

No. Copy-only is available. Moving eligible originals to Recently Deleted is optional and separately confirmed after their selected resources finish copying.

What if the archive stops halfway through?

Keep the saved plan and output folder, reconnect the destination, and resume. Check the report afterward; incomplete resources stay out of the space-saving step.

See the files first. Decide what happens next.
