What Photo Archive does

Photo Archive protects older photos and videos from your system Apple Photos library before you make room on your Mac or in iCloud Photos. It is a macOS-only workflow for sending selected media to an ordinary local folder or external HDD, SSD, or USB drive.

The order matters: choose older media, preview the archive, copy it and check that it finished, then decide separately whether any originals should move to Apple Photos’ Recently Deleted collection. FileLever never makes that reclaim choice for you.

Choose what to archive

Start with a cutoff date and the media you want to include: photos, videos, or both. Photo Archive shows the planned Year/month destination for each selected resource and keeps special media visible, including Live Photos, RAW+JPEG pairs, and current edits.

Choose an existing empty destination folder outside the Photos library. The folder can be on your Mac or an external drive. FileLever uses collision-safe names and will not overwrite an existing archive file.

Review the preview before copying

The preview is your chance to see the plan before the archive starts. Review:

  • the selected photo and video resources;
  • planned archive locations;
  • the destination’s readiness;
  • any unavailable or excluded items.

Cloud-only iCloud Photos originals can be requested incrementally while the archive runs. You do not have to switch Apple Photos to download every original to your Mac first. An item that cannot be retrieved or copied completely is reported and is never included in the space-saving step.

Archive and check the copy

FileLever copies each photo and video to the archive folder and checks the completed copy. A local archive report records what completed, what was skipped, and what needs attention. If the archive is interrupted, FileLever keeps the saved plan so you can resume when the destination is available again.

Treat the completed archive as the backup copy. Do not use a partial archive report as a reason to remove media from Apple Photos.

Free up storage only after the copy is complete

After every selected resource for a photo or video has finished copying, FileLever can offer an optional move of that source item to Apple Photos’ Recently Deleted collection. This is a separately confirmed action:

  • Copy-only remains available if you only want another recovery copy.
  • Failed, unavailable, or excluded resources keep their source item out of the space-saving step.
  • FileLever does not empty Recently Deleted for you.

Use Apple Photos’ own recovery period and controls as your final safety net.
