What this guide helps you do

Use Duplicate File Finder to identify files with genuinely identical contents, then decide which copy belongs where before you remove the extras. It is for exact matches—not visual similarity or filename guesses.

Before you scan

Choose the folders, drives, archives, photo libraries, direct Dropbox folders, or Google Drive folders synced locally with the Google Drive client that you want to review. If the location contains files you do not want in the result, narrow the scan first:

  • set a minimum file size to skip everyday files
  • limit scan depth when you only need part of a large folder tree
  • exclude caches, temporary folders, or generated files
  • add exclude patterns directly or load an exclude file

Common operating-system clutter is excluded by default.

How FileLever verifies a duplicate

FileLever uses a layered check before it presents a group as a duplicate:

  1. Group by size. Files with different sizes cannot be identical, so they do not need deeper comparison.
  2. Hash likely matches. Content hashes compare the files that could match instead of their names or dates. Dropbox content hashes are used where available.
  3. Confirm byte for byte. Matching candidates are verified at the byte level before they are shown as duplicates.
  4. Review the group. You choose which copy stays and which confirmed extras, if any, should be removed.

Review a group before cleanup

Each group keeps the matching files together. Review the full path, filename, and size of every copy before selecting anything for removal.

What you seeWhat it means
Duplicate groupTwo or more files confirmed to contain the same data.
KeepThe copy you want to retain because it belongs in the most useful location.
RemoveA confirmed extra copy you have chosen to clean up.
Reclaimable spaceStorage you could recover by removing the selected extras.
Skipped or unprocessedFiles that could not be scanned; they remain separate from confirmed results.

A duplicate is identical in content, not necessarily equal in usefulness. Keep the copy that belongs in the right folder—not simply the newest or shortest-named one.

For Google Drive client sync folders, reviewed cleanup is a local delete. The Google Drive client reconciles those changes with your Drive account afterward. For Dropbox folders, FileLever uses the Dropbox account you authorize directly; cleanup requires write access and explicit approval.

A practical example

If a photo archive includes copies in your organized library, Downloads, and an old camera import folder, FileLever can confirm whether they contain the same image data. Keep the library copy, then remove only the reviewed extras. Files that merely look similar are not treated as duplicates.
